While the previous series of psalms focused on various Davidic traumas, psalms fifteen through seventeen bookmark the themes described in psalms one and two. Who are the righteous? Why do the nations rage? Are the promises concerning the coming eternal kingdom certain? The composer of these psalms may have been David, but as I meditate, I hear Jesus speaking to his followers, praying to the Father, and warning those who oppose his coming kingdom.

Psalm 7: On the Run

Tradition has it that Psalm 7 was written by David as he eluded Saul’s attempts on his life. But this is not the only way to understand it. We appropriately can identify with Psalm 7’s words whenever we find ourselves in a situation where adversaries unjustly conspire against us. It can likewise apply if we are the subject of gossip or false accusations. Throughout history, many Christians inferred Psalm 7 to be a dialog between Jesus and the Father as the crucifixion approached. The Book of Judges – Early Deliverers

During Joshua’s time and that of the tribal elders, Israel was dedicated to Yahweh. Not so for the next generation. They abandoned their God and forgot their history. Perhaps they were tired of war. It made sense to coexist rather than fight. They began to worship Asherah the queen of heaven and confuse Baal with Yahweh. Canaanite rituals replaced or supplemented Levitical requirements. All was good in the short-term. There was peace. Not for long. The true God withdrew his support and protection, and this lead to a downward spiral of oppressions and rescue. This article focuses on first three of these episodes.
